Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin

[1706-1790] American public official, writer, scientist, and printer who played a major part in the American Revolution.

"The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason." Poor Richard's Almanack, 1758

"Lighthouses are more helpful than churches."

"He (the Rev. Mr. Whitefield) used, indeed, sometimes to pray for my conversion, but never had the satisfaction of believing that his prayers were heard." Franklin's Autobiography

"In the affairs of the world, men are saved, not by faith, but by the want of it."

Some volumes against Deism fell into my hands. They were said to be the substance of sermons preached at Boyles Lecture. It happened that they produced on me an effect precisely the reverse of what was intended by the writers; for the arguments of the Deists, which were cited in order to be refuted, appealed to me much more forcibly than the refutation itself. In a word, I soon became a thorough Deist.

"I have found Christian dogma unintelligible. Early in life, I absenteed myself from Christian assemblies."

Joshua: Injustice

  • "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."
Donald Rumsfeld sent this verse to inspire the troops during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. 1:9
  • "Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you ... There shall not any man be able to stand before thee." 1:3-5)
  • God "magnifies" Joshua and promises to "without fail" drive out all the inhabitants of the lands through which they passed. 3:7
  • "And the city shall be accursed ... and all that therein, to the Lord: only Rahab the harlot shall live." God explains that Rahab is to be spared since she hid Joshua's spies and lied to those who were searching for them (2:4-5). But why was everyone else killed? Some of them were probably liars too. 6:17
  • Keep yourselves from "the accursed thing". Whatever that is. But be sure to save all the silver and gold for God! 6:18-19
  • "And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword." 6:21
  • After killing everyone, "they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein." Only the valuables (silver, gold, brass, and iron) did they keep to "put into the treasury of the house of the Lord." 6:24
  • Joshua says that those who try to rebuild Jericho will be accursed by God, and will have to sacrifice both their oldest and their youngest sons in its construction. Well, Jericho still exists today, and is often considered to be the world's oldest, continuously occupied city. 6:26
  • God tells Joshua to kill whoever tood "the accursed thing." 7:10-12
  • If you happen to see "the accursed thing," don't touch it. If you do, you, your family, and all of your animals must be burned. 7:15
  • "And Joshua ... took Achan ... and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his sheep... And all of Israel stoned them with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones." This is because Achan "took of the accursed thing" -- whatever that means. But why would God require that Achan's sons and daughters (and even his animals) be stoned to death along with him? The Bible doesn't say. But it does tell us that "the Lord turned from the fierceness of his anger" when Achan, his children, and his animals were stoned to death and their dead bodies burned. 7:24-26
  • "When ye have taken the city [Ai] ... ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD. 8:8
  • "They smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape." 8:22
  • "When Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field ... all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword." 8:24
  • "All that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand." 8:25
  • God curses the Gibeonites to be slaves of the Jews forever. 9:21-27
  • "And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand."
God delivers the Amorites into Joshua's hand (so he can kill them all). 10:8
  • "And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way."
God slaughters the Amorites and even chases them along the way. 10:10
  • "The LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them ... and they died."
As the Amorites try to escape, God sends down huge hailstones and kills even more of them. 10:11
  • In a divine type of daylight savings time, God makes the sun stand still so that Joshua can get all his killing done before dark. 10:12-13
  • "The Lord fought for Israel." 10:14
  • God tells Joshua to "pursue after your enemies and smite the hindmost of them." (Kick their butts.) Don't let any of them escape "for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand." 10:19
  • Joshua tells his captains to "put your feet upon the necks of these kings." He says, "thus shall the Lord do to all of your enemies." Then Joshua kills the kings and hangs them on trees. 10:24-26
  • "Put your feet upon the necks of these kings." 10:24
  • "Thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies." 10:25
  • "Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees." 10:25
  • Joshua, at God's command, kills everyone and everything that he can find (including babies and little children)-- or, as the Bible puts it, he "utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord commanded." 10:28-32
  • Joshua, at God's command, kills everyone and everything that he can find (including babies and little children)-- or, as the Bible puts it, he "utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord commanded." 10:28-32
  • "Joshua ... smote it with the edge of the sword ... and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain." 10:28
  • "Then Joshua ... fought against Libnah: And the LORD delivered it also ... and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it." 10:29-30
  • "The LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which ... smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein." 10:32
  • "Joshua passed unto Eglon ... and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed." 10:34-35
  • "Joshua went ... unto Hebron ... and smote it with the edge of the sword ... and all the cities ... and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining." 10:36-37
  • "Joshua returned ... to Debir ... And he took it ... and all the cities ... and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining."10:38-39
  • "So Joshua ... left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded." 10:40
  • "All these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel." 10:42
  • God delivers the Hazorites into Joshua's hand, and he knows just what to do with them: he smites them all with (you guessed it) the edge of the sword until "there was not any left to breathe." 11:6-17
  • "And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them ... and they smote them, until they left them none remaining." 11:8
  • "Joshua ... smote the king thereof with the sword." 11:10
  • "And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe." 11:11
  • "And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded." 11:12
  • "Every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe." 11:14
  • "As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses." 11:15
  • "So Joshua took ... all their kings ... and smote them, and slew them." 11:16-17
  • "For it was of the Lord to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly." Notice that God hardens their hearts so that he can have an excuse to kill them. 11:20
  • "Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities." 11:21
  • Caleb offers to give his daughter to whoever conquers the city of Debir. Caleb's nephew wins the contest and is given his cousin for a prize. 15:16-17
  • "Did not Achan son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel?" To find out see Joshua 7:1-26. 22:20
  • One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you." 23:10
  • "I plagued Egypt." 24:5
  • God brags about drowning the Egyptians. 24:7
  • "I gave them [the Amorites] into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you." 24:8
  • "I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not."
God gave the Israelites other peoples' stuff (after killing them all). 24:13
  • "I delivered them into your hand." 24:11
  • God sent hornets to fight for the Israelites. 24:12
  • God is jealous and will never forgive you for your sins. "He will turn and do you hurt, and consume you." 24:19-20

     Period 1

Scientists Still Hopeful about Gene Therapy's Promise

    www.npr.org

Gene therapy, 25 years ago, was thought to be on the path of revolutionize medicine. That never happened, but today there is a dim gleam of light, (not at the end of the tunnel, that's a long way off) that say progress is being made. "The concept of gene therapy is simple. Some diseases are caused by damage to a single gene — for example, cystic fibrosis and hemophilia. Give patients the healthy gene, and in theory, the disease is cured." Back in the day, the 'cure' was put into a virus that would get in the body and help the damaged gene that causes the illness. That's all well and good, but the bodies of the test patience tried to fight off the virus. To make matters worse, when the virus did get in they caused cancer. Oooups. "The field of gene therapy is now seeing positive results. Scientists have found new ways to modify viruses to make them better at delivering genes, and several studies are showing that the gene therapy can effectively treat an array of disorders."

You may have notated by now that I do A LOT of current events on genes. This is because I find genes very interesting. They make us who we are from the color of our hair and eyes to how tall we maybe. Genes also take (some) part in determining if a person is gay or straight.  Research has identified several biological factors which may be related to the development of sexual orientation, including genes, prenatal hormones, and brain structure. No single controlling cause has been identified, and research is continuing in this area. At one time, twin studies appeared to point to a major genetic component, but problems in experimental design of the available studies have made their interpretation difficult, and one recent study appears to exclude genes as a major factor. My genes make me have my father's hair and my mother's eyes. It's nice to know that if some gene stops working, we may be able to get a fix with gene therapy.

    Hell

When you die there’s a place called the hell where you burn in pain and misery for forever and ever until the end of time.

You go to hell when you’re evil do something that is considered sin, but you also go to hell if you choose not to believe in god.

This makes no sense at all. Most people aren't bad people. It’s not right for innocent people who haven’t done anything wrong to be tortured for eternity. It’s also not right for you who don’t know me to judge me, saying that I’m a bad person for not believing and I need to be tortured forever just because I don’t have the same religion as you. This make you no better than all the other religions that you attack were being violent. It would be a boring world if everyone was the same, so why would you judge someone for having a different belief system than you much less tell them that they deserve to be tortured in the cast into the same fiery pit as rapists, murderers, child abusers, terrorist, and dictators such as Hitler.

According to the 1st amendment the pledge is unconstitutional due to the fact that this country is formed on freedom of religion. And if you want to shove some s*** down my throat about how the country was built on Christianity, your wrong. People came to the new world to worship as they please and have religious freedom…

    You Gotta Love God!

Ricky Gervais- the creator of the office.
here he is talking about god and the old testament...
i have been an atheist sence i was 8 about as well. Thats when I began to understand it. god was never part of my life and i did not understand it untill i was about 8...

    Don't ask Don't tell

You’re never supposed to talk about two things. Religion and politics. Why? Because fight break out. Either you will yell and scream or punches could fly.

If you’re a girl and you like a boy, and you go up to the boy and you say "I like you. Do you like me?" you look like a stalker and a freak. Most people would not even be able to go up to them and just stammer, much less talk to them.

This is like politics because when you talk about both subjects emotions run high... you look like a weirdo freak if you come right out. You look like twisted and creepy crazy person on the other side of the political spectrum. This could cause a ruckus, a fight based off people’s ideas or beliefs. It’s idea of liking someone, and the idea of being on the other side of the argument.

Knowing this, we have two choices. We can either, shut up and keep you’re rude, offensive, smart ass comments to ourselves. Other wise you could look beyond the other persons ideas or belifes. We have to try to be kind to one anouther. We teach our childeren "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." The golden rule. How about "JUST TRY TO GET ALONG! I'm shure that their a nice person, you just have to get to know them..." Blah Blah Blah, golden freaken rule...

    Science Changes

Without looking at the theories in science vs. religion, one of the key differences is that religion stays the same over the years. Finding flaws and correcting them brings us closer to the truth. This may mean, disproving some well know "facts". This may mean bringing forth evidence that supports new theories.

Religion changes when its forced to. Like slavery. It was ok in the bible. But guess what! It’s illegal now. Why? CAUSE IT IMORALLY WRONG! Except for the hard core Christians, most people have had "un-holy sex" before marriage... this has only changed over hundreds of years...

There is a book called "Going, Going, Gone." subtitled "Vanishing America" by: Susan Jonas & Marilyn Nissenson. The book talks about things that used to be common place, but aren't around today. Some of the things are:

    • black and white movies
    • blue laws (except in SC where I live...)
    • Girdles
    • hitch hiking
    • Leisure suits
    • nuns
    • paper dolls
    • polio scares
    • soda fountains
    • tv antennas
    • type writers
    AND
    • wedding night virgins
From the article about the wedding night virgins, there is a quote from a 25 year old, who’s friends intrudes her at parties as "this is Chris, she doesn’t drink and she’s a virgin." This of course is embracing to Chris, and she gets mad at her friends for saying so... She is "proud of her self-control" and yet does not fit in cause this common place, bible rule, has just faded away...

In conclusion, the bible has out dated rules that don’t apply to today’s world, and on rules that make no sense... check out this video on some of the wack rules in the bible:

Sitting @ home reading the bible. God created the light before making the sun. Sun line 16. Light line 3... Of Genesis

    When Was The Bible Written?

The Bible was written over a period of 1400 to 1800 years by more than 40 different authors. The Bible is a compilation of 66 separate books, divided into two primary divisions: the Old Testament (containing 39 books) and the New Testament (containing 27 books). It is believed that all of the books of the Bible were written under inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

The first five books of the Old Testament (known as the Pentateuch or Torah) was written by Moses during the forty years that the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness (1450 - 1410 B.C.). The twelve historical books of the Old Testament continue to record the history of the people of Israel under the leadership of Joshua, through the period of the Judges and the reign of the kings of Israel. The books of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther record the history of Israel following its period of captivity under Babylonian rule. The historical books span the history of Israel from 1050 - 465 B.C.

The books of Job, the Psalms, the Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon are considered the poetical books of the Old Testament. Scholars have been unable to determine with any specificity when Job was written. Based upon the manners and customs recorded in the text, many believe that the book was written during the time of the Patriarchs of the faith. The individual Psalms, comprising the entire collection, were written from the days of Israel's Exodus to its restoration after the Babylonian captivity. Many of the Psalms were written by King David during his reign over Israel. The entire book was compiled between 1000 - 300 B.C.

King David's son, Solomon is credited with writing Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon, during his reign (971 - 931 B.C.). The seventeen Prophetical books of the major and minor prophets span Israel's history from 700 - 450 B.C. For 400 years after the writing of the Book of Malachi, the Lord was silent and the Old Testament was closed.

It is generally agreed that the Book of Mark was the first Gospel written and that it was written between A.D. 50 and 75. Of the four Gospel's, John's is considered to have been the last one written, around A.D. 85. The Book of Acts, a historical account of the establishment of the early Christian church, is believed to have been written by one of the Apostle Paul's associates, around A.D. 62 (near the end of Paul's imprisonment in Rome).

The Pauline Epistles (the Apostle Paul's letters to the early church) were authored between A.D. 50 - 67. The author of Hebrews is unknown, but the book is commonly thought to have been written around A.D. 70. The epistles of the other Apostles were written between A.D. 48 - 90.

The Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ is believed to have been penned by the Apostle John between A.D. 70 - 95.

    The Pledge of Allegiance

There is one thing that school children recite every day in school. They learn it in kindergarten.
It’s the Pledge of Allegiance. As most every one knows it goes,
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Let's look at this again, "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." This poem seams alright. But there is one part that somewhat stands out, it is "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

WHY IS THAT IN THERE??!! Don't we have religious freedom? Yes we do so why? Some may say "well it’s always been there." Well, NO IT HAS NOT!! The one nation under god part was not added until 1954!!!

I may sound like a broken record when I say that about the pledge, but it just seems wrong. I HAVE to recite the pledge every morning when I get to public school. I do recite it as it supposed to be, including the "Under god" bit. Here are some interesting facts about the under god part of the pledge of allegiance.

    • "Under God" was officially incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance June 14, 1954 by a Joint Resolution of Congress amending § 7 of the Flag Code enacted in 1942.

    • The man to first initiate the addition of "under God" to the Pledge was Louis A. Bowman (1872-1959).

    • At a meeting on February 12, 1948, Lincoln's Birthday, he led the Society in swearing the Pledge with two words added, "under God." He stated that the words came from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. He repeated his revised Pledge at other meetings.

    • In 1952, Holger Christian Langmack wrote a letter to President Truman suggesting the inclusion of "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.

    • Bills were introduced in Congress as early as 1953, when Representative Louis C. Rabaut of Michigan sponsored a resolution at the suggestion of a correspondent

    • In a 2002 case brought by atheist Michael Newdow, whose daughter was being taught the Pledge in school, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the phrase "under God" an unconstitutional endorsement of monotheism when the Pledge was promoted in public school

    • In 2004, linguist Geoffrey Nunberg criticized the addition of "under God" for a different reason. The original supporters of the addition thought that they were simply quoting Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. However, Nunberg said that to Lincoln and his contemporaries, "under God" meant "God willing" and they would have found its use in the Pledge of Allegiance grammatically incorrect.

    • A bill — H.R. 2389 — was introduced in Congress in 2005 which, if enacted into law, would have stripped the Supreme Court and most federal courts of the power to consider any legal challenges to government requiring or promoting of the Pledge of Allegiance.

    • In 2006, in the Florida case Frazier v. Alexandre, No. 05-81142 (S.D. Fla. May 31, 2006) "A federal district court in Florida has ruled that a 1942 state law requiring students to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution.

    • On October 5, 2009, a 10 year old boy named Will Phillips refused to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance during his fifth grade class at West Fork, Arkansas Elementary School. He was protesting the lack of "liberty and justice for all," because of how he saw gays and lesbians being denied rights such as marriage and adoption of children.

    Atheist- what it means

Atheist- what does it really mean? To many people it means "non-believer". and that's true. Although from my experience the word means more of "hater of god" "evil" and "anti Christ". According to dictionary.com atheist means:

–noun a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.

I'm an atheist, I don't really care about god. I don't think about pleasing him. Religion is just not part of my life.

But because of my outward nature, I have told people about my believes. If you ask me about my religion, I will tell you that I'm an atheist, an that will be the end of it. Only there really is never an end of it. Lots of times I will tell people this and either stare in disbelief, or start the "nu-uhs" where they blabber on and on about how I'm wrong and their right.

So I have decided to speak out. Have my voice reach out to the people beyond my small southern town in South Carolina. I am going to tell you what I think, about what I believe or do not believe in. Whether you agree with me or not, its what I think. But most of all its important that no matter what your religion is you see me as a person. you take my opinion into account. and weather 90% of people believe something, or 99% or, even yet a 100% believe in something does not make them right
